Uhuru and Raila unveil 14-member dialogue team

Nearly two months after President Uhuru Kenyatta and Opposition leader Raila Odinga shook hands vowing to work together, the two leaders have now unveiled a 14-member team to spearhead the process of uniting the country.

The team dubbed Advisors for the Building Bridges Initiative is made up of both political and religious leaders as well as renowned scholars.

They will be working under the direction of the secretariat headed by Ambassador Martin Kimani and Mr. Paul Mwangi.

“It is notified for the general information of the public that President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga have appointed a team of 14 advisors to assist in the work of the Building Brides Initiative,” reads a statement sent out by Mr. Odinga’s spokesman Dennis Onyango.

The 14 include:
1. Dr Adams Oloo
2. Agnes Kavindu
3. Senator Amos Wako
4. Ms. Florence Omose
5. Professor Saeed Mwanguni
6. Mzee James Matundura
7. Major (rtd) John Seii
8. Bishop Lawi Imathiu
9. Hon Maison Leshomo
10. Senator Mohamed Yusuf Haji
11. Morompi ole Ronkai

President Kenyatta and Mr. Odinga caught the country by surprise on March 9, 2018 when they called for truce into their highly polarised feuds, signifying their unity pact with the now famous handshake.

In a joint statement outside the President’s Harambee House office the two promised to roll out a programme to unite and heal the country following the divisive 2017 General Election.

“The National interest must always prevail over those elections. And this is why me and my brother (Raila) have agreed that starting today, we will begin a process of bringing our people together. That, we will begin a process of discussing what ails us and what creates divisions amongst us. And we look forward to the support of every single leader,” said President Kenyatta on March 9.

However, a month after the Harambee House meeting, anxiety and uncertainty emerged over the perceived delay in unveiling the road map to achieve the nine key issues Kenyatta and Odinga outlined in their joint statement.

The committee tasked with crafting the roadmap, co-chaired by Amb. Kimani and Lawyer Paul Mwangi however reassured the public that implementation of the pact was on course.

Kenyatta and Odinga settled on a 9-point agenda to resolve long standing national challenges.

These include ethnic antagonism and competition, lack of national ethos, inclusivity, devolution, divisive elections, safety and security, corruption, shared prosperity and responsibilities and rights.
