Political leaders drawn from the
Kenya Kwanza faction now want President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila
Odinga, as the initiators of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) bill, to be
held accountable following Thursday’s Supreme Court ruling.
The leaders, who are allied to Deputy President William Ruto, now want the relevant
bodies to take action on the duo concerning the expenditure of the whole
process, which the court has since declared unconstitutional.
During a campaign rally at Lamu, the leaders chewed out Odinga and
President Kenyatta in regard to the fall of BBI and called for State agencies to
audit the whole process to determine its cost and the source of the funds used
to popularize it.
“Going forward, because the court says huwezi kushtakiwa ukiwa kwa ofisi,
we shall set up an inquiry to find out how much money was spent on BBI, who
authorized this expenditure and we will hold everybody to account,” Ford-Kenya party
leader Moses Wetangula said.
“President Uhuru today, unfortunately for you, you have no capacity, no
ability and no opportunity to say you will revisit because they said with
finality. Kenyans we must be proud of our courts.”
Garissa Township MP Aden Duale echoed Wetangula’s sentiments saying he was
going to move a motion in Parliament to enable authoritative bodies to look
into the government’s spending in the process.
“BBI ilikuwa ni dhulma kati ya Uhuru Kenyatta na ndugu yake…walijaribu
kuchukua pesa ya wananchi. Sector ya Public Finance, Article 201 says, public
finance must be spent in an open and transparent and accountable manner. Uhuru
na Raila mlitumia zaidi ya bilion ishirini na mlitumia BBI as a conduit to
steal and plunder public resources,” Duale said.
“On Tuesday I am going to move down
a motion in Parliament asking the Auditor General, who is the custodian of
public resources., together with EACC, Controller of Budget and the DPP that
those who allowed the expenditure of Ksh.20 billion in the BBI to be held
accountable.”
Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki on his part stated that despite the
Supreme Court ruling the initiative as illegal, Kenya Kwanza would continue to
push for the front runners to be held accountable.
“Handshake brothers, you have wasted our four years as a nation, you have
wasted our money as taxpayers of Kenya in an illegal process, now we want to
tell you that it is not enough that your illegal decision has been nullified,
we are going to hold you accountable for the misuse of public funds," he
said.
Other leaders present included;
ANC's Musalia Mudavadi, MPs Aisha Jumwa (Malindi), Mohamed Kolosh (Wajir
West), former Senators Hassan Omar (Mombasa) and Abdirahaman Ali Hassan (Wajir)
among others.
