A section of students from the University of Nairobi on Tuesday held protests in the Nairobi CBD to support the proposed impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from office.

According to the students, Gachagua has forgotten his mandate as deputy president and is instead propagating politics of division.

“Today we come out to support the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua because he has shown his tribalistic nature. He cannot be the DP whereas he is only supporting people from his region,” said one of the students.

“He cannot be a symbol of national unity. Let him go embrace village politics,” added another student.

They called on President William Ruto not to interfere with the impeachment process but instead allow members of parliament to carry out their constitutional mandate.

The impeachment motion against DP Gachagua was formally tabled in the National Assembly on Tuesday afternoon after meeting the required threshold.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula read out the impeachment motion against the DP after confirming that 291 MPs had supported it hence surpassing the threshold. For any motion to be tabled, it requires the support of at least 117 lawmakers.

In the motion tabled by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, Gachagua is accused of dividing Kenyans on ethnic lines, undermining the presidency, violating the oath of office and contradicting the National Cohesion and Integration Act.
