UPDATE: Death toll in Naivasha fire tragedy hits 33, 6 injured
The death toll in Naivasha’s fire tragedy has hit 33, Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery has confirmed.
The CS also clarified that six people were injured in the tragic accident, adding that two of the injured were treated and discharged while four were transferred to Nairobi for treatment.
Of the four, three were admitted at the Kenyatta National Hospital while one is admitted at Nairobi Hospital, all with serious burns.
Speaking to the media at Harambee House in Nairobi, the CS clarified that accident was caused when a light lorry, a Canter, carrying higly flammable materials hit a bump at Karai area on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway and lost control, hitting cars headed in the opposite direction.
The flames from the burning lorry quickly spread to other vehicles where 13 vehicles were burnt beyond recognition in the 9:30pm incident.
The accident caused a massive traffic snarl up, leaving many road users stuck as police and the fire brigade worked to clear the road.
