Wajir county commissioner says census fraud not in entire county, 2 chiefs arrested

Wajir County Commissioner Lyford Kibaara on Tuesday confirmed the arrest of two chiefs and an assistant for alleged involvement in malpractice during the ongoing census.

According to Mr. Kibaara, the three; Khalif Sirat (chief), Khalid May (assistant) and Musa Abdi (Kumbi location) were apprehended in Wajir South over malpractice in their respective locations, insisting that those were just isolated cases.

“It is true that three administrators have been arrested and investigations into the matter are underway.

“This is, however, not in the entire county. They were involved in inflating the numbers in their respective sub locations,” said Mr. Kibaara.

The county commissioner however reassured the public that they are doing everything it takes to ensure no further irregularities emerge, further warning census officials against engagement in any form of malpractice.

Various incidents of irregularities have been recorded across various parts of the country with several people being arrested as the government seeks to safeguard the credibility of the Census.

A Member of County Assembly and a Chief in Baringo County were on Monday arrested after allegedly inciting residents to boycott the ongoing census.

A man and his wife were arrested in Kisumu for attacking a chief and village elder who had accompanied census officers at their house in Obunga slums.
