Wakulima market traders agree to relocate after meeting with Sakaja

Following the meeting with the Governor, the traders dealing in onions, potatoes, oranges, and pineapples are reported to have agreed to move to Kangundo market despite an earlier protest.

Speaking on behalf of the traders, Wakulima Market Chair Paul Maina, who attended the meeting said; "After discussions with the Governor, we have agreed to keep law and order and we have agreed that all additional vehicles will move to Kangundo Market." 

Governor Sakaja reiterated that the relocation of the traders from Wakulima market is essential for restoring order in the city.

He noted that both Muthurwa and Marikiti markets have become overcrowded, with three times the intended capacity of 1,200 traders. 

"We mean well and cannot allow our people to suffer. This move will ensure that traders have a better space for improved services," said Governor Sakaja.

To ease the transition, Governor Sakaja also announced a two-month waiver on cess payments, typically collected by the county from traders.

"We understand that moving your businesses will cause disruption, so for the next two months, you won't pay anything," the Governor confirmed.

Also present at the meeting was Nairobi Police Boss Adamson Bungei who assured the traders about their safety during the transition, affirming that security measures would be in place.

"Our core mandate is to provide security, and we will ensure that you are safe," said Bungei.

On Thursday, Acting Nairobi County Secretary Godfrey Akumali noted that with over 3,600 traders operating in a market meant for just 1,200, the situation at Wakulima has spiralled out of control.

According to the county government, Kangundo market can accommodate 5,000 traders and offers 4,000 parking slots.

The county further hails the new market as a prime location for business expansion due to its location at the junction of major highways leading to the airport and the city center.
