Wawira Njiru: My dream to transform Kenya’s education one meal at a time

In her early 20s Wawira Njiru learnt that children within her Ruiru home, missed school due to lack of food. The hunger drew them further from school, as they opted to beg for food or search for menial jobs to buy a meal.

Being an international student studying in Australia then, Wawira would dedicate her school holidays to preparing meals for children within Ruiru. She served the first meal to 25 children.

The Food 4 Education initiative has now become a shared dream for policymakers in Kenya, and over 31 million meals have been served to school children in Kenya.

In the International Women’s Day 2024 coverage, Citizen Digital features Wawira Njiru, the Founder and Executive Director of Food 4 Education.
