Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu and former Senator
David Musila have promised to set their political differences aside to drum up
support for Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party presidential aspirant
Raila Odinga ahead of the August polls.
The pair, despite this truce, is set to lock
horns at the ballot with Ngilu looking to defend her seat which Musila has set
his eyes on.
Ngilu will be seeking the position under a
NARC ticket while Musila will be vying under a Jubilee ticket; both parties constitute
the larger Azimio coalition party.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday after an
IEBC meeting with Kitui County aspirants, Ngilu stated that getting Odinga into
State House supersedes hers and Musila’s personal aspirations.
“We are both Azimio candidates. The other
parties are our competitors so we must continuously consult. We are not enemies
at all, we want to make sure that we are going to win the national government,”
said Ngilu.
“We are both campaigning for Odinga and if
either of us becomes governor of Kitui we will be in the same government.”
Ngilu likewise noted that a vacuum had been
left in the Ukambani region, which Azimio needs to capitalize on, following the
exit of Wiper boss Kalonzo Musyoka from the Odinga-led coalition.
“Wiper has disengaged and said they are not
part of Azimio so we, the two gubernatorial candidates for Azimio, must continuously
consult,” she said.
Musila on his part noted that there was no
bad blood between himself and Ngilu while stating that their main objective
moving forward would be to help Odinga clinch the county’s top seat.
“We are Azimio candidates and we respect one
another. We are only two Azimio candidates so that suggests that we must be
friendly. That is why we are standing here to consult as members of one
political union,” he said.
