Western Kenya believed to have highest prevalence of illicit brew consumption - Report

According to a report by the National Campaign Against Drug Abuse Authority (NACADA), 68.2% of the population in Western Kenya believes that illicit brew production is high in their community, while 82.9% and 85.8% believe that the sale and consumption of the alcohol are high in their community respectively. 

Nyanza region followed in the prevelance, where 53.2% of the population believe illicit brew consumption is widespread, with 69.7% and 81.9% believing that the sale and consumption is respectively high. 

While Rift Valley region came third, North Eastern region has the least rate of illicit brew production, sale and consumption. 

According to NECADA CEO, Victor Okioma, said the report of the 2022 national survey on the “Status of Drugs and Substance Use in Kenya” provided estimates of the prevalence of drugs and substance use at the national and regional levels and for rural and urban areas. 

The survey established that alcohol continues to be the most widely used substance of abuse in Kenya with findings pointing towards increasing demand for cheaper and readily available alcoholic products especially traditional brews, and potable spirits.
