Wetangula lauds DigiSchool initiative, urges tech companies to go beyond cities

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has commended the DigiSchool Kenya initiative, a project aimed at connecting  Kenyan schools to ensure integration of ICT technologies into learning.

Speaking in Kakamega County, during a donation of ICT material by Huawei Kenya, Wetangula termed the initiative as an equaliser in the Kenyan education system.

The Speaker challenged technology companies in Kenya to look beyond the city and aim at improving digital access in rural areas too.

During the event, Huawei donated 30 computers and a 60-inch Max Hub smart teaching screens to St. Steven’s Namasoli Secondary School, aimed at empowering students and teachers with access to modern digital learning tools.

“Other big companies focus on Nairobi. When they go further they get to Kiambu, Machakos, Ngong then back to Nairobi…because it is fashionable to be in the city,” Wetangula said.

“Huawei has come to villages to give you what the children in Nairobi have. What they learn, you are going to learn, what they see, you are going to see here,” the Speaker told learners at the school.

The DigiSchool initiative, spearheaded by Huawei, alongside the Ministry of Education and ICT Authority in partnership with UNESCO, connects schools to broadband networks, video conferencing equipment, and enables teacher training and remote learning for students.

“We urge all leaders to embrace partnerships for good and invest in building a strong ICT-literacy foundation. Together, we can nurture the next generation of workers who will drive Kenya’s vision of a thriving digital economy,” said Khadija Mohammed, Media & Government Relations Director, Huawei Kenya.
