What next after the Cabinet Secretaries vetting exercise?

An anxious nation awaits the National Assembly Committee on Appointments to present a compiled report which will decide the fate of the 24 Cabinet nominees recommended by President William Ruto.

The committee conducted a week-long vetting exercise which saw 24 Cabinet Secretaries nominated to different dockets get on the 'hot seat' for consideration of their suitability for appointment to office.

The 7-day exercise which ended on Saturday, October 22, paved the way for the 15-member vetting committee to either recommend or reject the nominees before the National Assembly by Friday, October 28.

Once the report is tabled on the floor of the House, legislators will then have it adopted before Thursday, November 3. The adoption supersedes an intricate review of the presentations made before them.

If the House approves all members, they assume office "by swearing or affirming faithfulness to the people and the Republic of Kenya before the President" as dictated by the Constitution.

If some are rejected, Section 152 of the Constitution allows a member of the National Assembly to propose a motion requiring the President to dismiss them if supported by at least one-quarter of all the members of the Assembly.

If the House finds the allegations true, President Ruto will then be needed to recommend other nominees and go over the process once again before assuming office.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that the committee found a number of President Ruto's nominees to be unsuitable.

Sources within the Azimio coalition who spoke anonymously to Daily Nation said that the President should nominate other suitable Kenyans and drop the five candidates.

As it stands, a few nominees have admitted to having cases in court which might impede them from securing their cabinet spots.

Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary nominee Mithika Linturi said, during the vetting exercise, that he has 35 civil cases in court.

Public Service and Affirmative Action CS nominee Aisha Jumwa admitted to having a murder case in court.
