Who is Mwangi wa Iria?
Murang'a Governor Francis
Mwangi wa Iria is a two-term governor who was first elected on a TNA ticket for
his first term and on a Jubilee ticket for his second.
Wa Iria is now the party
leader and presidential flag bearer of the Usawa Kwa Wote party.
The 58-year-old father of
three has based his presidential campaign on the promise to transform lives
through agriculture.
Born one year after the
county gained independence, Wa Iria attended Kiboi primary school in Murang'a
county for his primary school education, before joining Weithaga Boys’ High
School in Kiharu, Murang'a.
His educational journey took
him to Moi University before he travelled to the UK for further studies at the
Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply.
Wa Iria, known for his grip
on Murang'a county politics since 2013 when he took office, previously held the
role of the managing director at the New Kenya Cooperative Creameries (KCC).
Prior to his tenure at the
helm of KCC, has also served as a National Sales Manager of Kenya Breweries
Ltd, Managing Director of Ngano Feeds Ltd, CEO of Freshco Seeds and General
Manager of the Commercial Division of Industrial Promotion Services that brings
together more than 30 companies owned by the Aga Khan Development Network.
3 years after he clinched his second term as the Murang'a county boss, Wa Iria set his sights on the country’s presidency and declared his interest to run in this year's General Election.
Wa Iria has named Alfayo
Onyambu who hails from Kisii County as his running mate.
Onyambu worked in the
transport sector at the National Road Safety Agency and Kenya Transport
Association and had also served as a board member of the Kenya Port Community
members association.
Onyambu unsuccessfully ran
for political office in 2017 where he contested the Kisii Senatorial seat on a
Jubilee ticket
Wa Iria who claims to be the
custodian of the Kikuyu cultural shrine in Murang'a is also pledging to unite
the rich vote central Kenya as he aspires to lead the whole country.
