Win for medical fraternity as gov’t posts 6,484 interns

The Ministry of Health has announced the posting of 6,484 medical interns under the 2025/2026 internship cohort.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, in a statement, confirmed that the interns will begin a 12-month structured internship
programme starting July 1, which is aimed at offering supervised clinical
training and hands-on experience in accredited health facilities across the
country.
“This milestone underscores the Ministry's continued
dedication to strengthening Kenya's health workforce and developing a pipeline
of skilled hands-on professionals to support service delivery across the
country,” Duale stated.
The interns will be deployed to various internship centres depending on their professional qualifications.
The breakdown of cadres is as
follows:
- Medical
Officer Interns – 1,147
- Dentist
Interns – 87
- Pharmacist
Interns – 500
- BSc
Clinical Officer Interns – 659
- Diploma
Clinical Officer Interns – 1,993
- BSc
Nursing Officer Interns – 2,098
All eligible pre-interns have thus been directed to collect their
posting letters in person on Monday, June 30, 2025, from 9:00
a.m. at Afya House, Nairobi.
The announcement comes months after collaborative consultations led by the Ministry of Health and the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) after months of stalemate over deployment and delayed placements.
