The victim, identified as Lucy Adhiambo Ouma of Mago Village, was attacked at around 4.00 pm when she had gone to fetch water from the river.
According to the Deputy County Commissioner for Usigu Sub‑county Betha Onyango, witnesses said that a passerby was the one who raised the alarm after seeing the crocodile dragging her into the river.
While confirming the incident, the administrator said that teams from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the National Government Administrative officers responded immediately. They worked together with the locals and managed to retrieve the body from the water about two hours later.
Onyango cautioned residents to exercise vigilance along the riverbanks, especially during this rainy season when water levels are high and crocodiles are more active.
Lucy’s body was moved to Bondo sub-county hospital morgue to await postmortem and the DCC has urged locals to minimize the time that they spend at the river, warning against washing clothes and dishes there because that exposes them to danger.
Meanwhile the locals led by former Councilor John Obera Ombere have decried the rampant crocodile attacks in the area, and appealed for government intervention to end the menace.
