Woman poisons child, attempts suicide after husband’s ‘infidelity’

Residents of Buwai Village of Kakamega County were shocked when a woman poisoned herself and 18-month-old baby over her husbands alleged extramarital affairs.

The woman, identified as Sarah Khadija Opondo, was found vomiting blood outside her burning house by neighbours.

Confirming the Friday night incident, area Chief Patrick Imbiakha condemned the act saying that he received reports from villagers about the woman’s case Saturday morning and called for her arrest.

“Neighbors say they heard screams from the woman’s house last night at around and when they got to the scene, they found the house burning with no one inside,” said Imbiakha.

Ms Opondo allegedly set the house on fire after consuming the poison and feeding it to her little one.

Thanks to swift action by residents, the baby girl was saved and rushed to Kakamega General Hospital where she has been admitted.

The woman is being held at Kakamega Police station.

Chief Imbiakha has also urged young women to seek advice from experienced married women for peaceful marriage life, adding that such actions are unacceptable.
