Woman shot dead in renewed Laikipia banditry attacks

Tension is high at Ol Moran area in Laikipia County over renewed cattle raids in the area with the latest incident leaving one person dead.

Alice Muthoni, 65, was on Tuesday night killed at her Gathanji home by bandits alleged to be from the neighbouring Samburu county.

According to residents, three armed men attacked her at around 9 pm after a foiled attempt to steal her two cows.

The raiders shot her three times on her stomach after she tried to raise alarm before leaving without stealing anything.

A resident, Bension Kamara, said the residents are living in fear following the latest banditry attack that comes in the backdrop of an operation that saw illegal grazers evicted from the area.

He said that this is the third time the suspected bandits had attacked the village in the last one week.

Sossian Ward MCA Jacob Edung’ regretted that tension was rising in the area, after security operations were halted, urging the government to move with speed and ensure the safety of the local people.

Laikipia County Commander Simon Kipkeu said four people have so far been arrested in connection with the incident.

He said that they are being held at Ol Moran police station and are helping police with investigations.
