The National Assembly Ad Hoc Committee of Inquiry into the Worldcoin project has been told that Kenyans constitute 25% of the Cryptocurrency firm’s customers.

350 thousand Kenyans registered for world coin in just under one week constituting 25% of the world coin customers.

David Njoka, the Head of Cyber Security Standards and Policy at the National Computer and Cybercrimes Coordination Committee told the committee that Worldcoin identified itself as a research institution before escalating its data collection and processing activities.

“The rate at which world coin was being adopted just like the other crypto currencies are being adopted in the country was quite alarming, we need to stop and look for a solution, 350 thousand in one week is quite high,” Njoka said.

As opposed to prior statements by government officials that the data that was taken from Kenyans was still in the country and safe, Njoka said the data is stored in servers based in the United stated of America.

“From our interviews they mentioned that the data was transferred to the Amazon servers based in the US. They had indicated that the data is secure but that needs deeper investigations,”Njoka stated.

Njoka and his director James Kimuyu were however castigated by members of the committee for failing to perform their role and enabling Worldcoin to operate in the country illegally.

“We should be expecting proper answers to the questions that we ask because no one else can answer them. We need to amend the cybercrimes act and put in place a proper committee that has teeth to bite,” said Tetu MP Geoffrey Wandeto.

“What is your role in registering and operationalisation of companies like Worldcoin?” Posed Dagoreti South MP John Kiarie.

Worldcoin operations in Kenya were suspended on August 2 over security concerns.
