Wazalendo off the mark with win over USIU
Wazalendo registered their first win of the Kenya
Hockey Union (KHU) Men’s Premier League season with a 2-0 victory over USIU on Sunday
at City Park.
Sutcliffe Osagi opened the scoring via a field goal on
the 23rd minute and Rioba Otora doubled his side’s advantage five minutes later
from a penalty.
Momentum swung in favour of USIU in the third quarter
but they were unable to capitalize thanks in part in to some stoic defending
from the Wazalendo backline.
The Wazalendo interim head coach Joseph Ndungu Njogu
applauded his side for the splendid performance.
"We needed the victory to get us up and running
for the season so now we soldier on to our next fixture," Njogu said.
His USIU counterpart John Kabuu said he felt they
deserved a better result and bemoaned the absence of some of his key players
from the clash.
"The game didn't go according to our expectations
and for us this is three points dropped. We are back to drawing board ahead of
our next fixture,” he said.
Victory Wazalendo move into fourth place on the standings
with three points, one ahead of USIU who are fifth with two points.
Wazalendo next face an away trip to Western Jaguars in
Kakamega on April 10. USIU will play Jaguars the day earlier at the same venue.
In an entertaining women’s fixture, defending
champions Blazers shared the spoils from a 1-1 draw with the 2019 runners-up
USIU.
Terry Juma put Blazers ahead following a successful
penalty conversion before Veronica Mava restored parity through a field goal.
Blazers host Strathmore University next Sunday while
USIU will be away against Amira Sailors on April 3.
