Ageing warrior Buffon mulls Juve future

On the eve of his 40th birthday Gianluigi Buffon is considering his future as Juventus ‘keeper and is looking to his club for guidance.

Italy’s failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup saw him retire as national captain and he is now struggling to make up his mind whether or not to continue at club level.

“Time is a tyrant,” he said when quitting the Italy camp.

Time however hasn’t truly caught up with Buffon yet, who despite his greying beard appears to be still in possession of the top drawer skills that saw him debut at Parma in 1995.

But Buffon again worried Juve fans Friday when he evoked a possible retirement.

“I’m going to meet the president Andrea Agnelli. I want the best for this team and want to know which role the club feel is best for me to play,” Buffon told La Repubblica.

“I want to know if Juventus still feel I can still do it.”

When asked if he would like to extend his deal by a further season Buffon relied that he would be delighted. “But along with the club we’ll find the best solution.”

Juventus, with six consecutive Italian league titles, may already have thir solution in 27-year-old Poland ‘keeper Wojciech Szczęsny.

“There’s no shame being number two to Gigi. And I didn’t come here just for a season, I came here for ten seasons and it’s a great experience to train with him.”

Szczesny is on the team-sheet to start the weekend game at Chievo with Buffon on the bench.
