AK fury over Kosgei’s mistreatment in Warsaw Marathon

Athletics Kenya (AK) has expressed its disappointment with Warsaw Marathon organizers for risking Recho Kosgei’s life after she collapsed 800m to the finish line at the Polish capital in Sunday’s race.

In an exclusive interview with Citizen Digital, AK said that it  could hardly understand why Kosgei who had a strong lead was left to fight for a her life for more than  two minutes with no assistance from the support staff or get a quick response from the paramedics.

In the short video that has gone viral, Kosgei is seen veering side-to-side on the road and fell backwards to the ground where she struggled to get up for two and half minutes until a male  participant tried to help but gave up and went on with his race.

“I would urge race organisers both local and international to ensure the safety of athletes and all participants. It’s very sad and heartbreaking to see her struggle like that. These things do happen at times with an athlete, that is why a proper support team is a must,” said Nairobi AK chairman Barnaba Korir.

Korir added that the federation learnt of the details on Monday and are making efforts to reach Kosgei who was the runners up during last year’s Stanchart Marathon.

Korir, a former athlete advised athletes to do proper training before going for a race adding that drinking a lot of water before, during and after the race should be a mandatory practice to prevent dehydration.

Athletics lovers led by former Boston Marathon champion Wesley Korir condemned the organisers for their actions.

“This beyond acceptable  Although is it illegal for race official to help a runner I think there comes a time when logic takes over @iaaforg,” Korir tweeted.

On social media, Kenyans reacted with fury. “So upsetting #WarsawMarathon So there was someone to film it but no one to help?” Magda Be asked.

This is sad to watch! Kindness costs nothing. The organizers of the #Warsawmarathon and onlookers who failed to help her should be ashamed,” Sarah Kandie reacted.
