All is set for the Barng'etuny Mountain Run in Nandi County

The race, which will involve experienced and young athletes from all over the country, will also be used to select the Kenyan team that will compete at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships (WMTRC) set for September 25-28 in Canfranc-Pirineos, Spain.

Athletics Kenya Nandi County and Central Rift executive Peter Sang disclosed plans to elevate the event to world status even as he urged area residents to turn up in large numbers.

“As the secretary of the local organizing committee, I welcome the leaders, athletes and fans to witness this special event. As we talk, the preparation is ready and the security has been beefed up. We have arrangements to ensure the athletes are tested to ensure they travel clean.

“The athlete will run in a very tough course including a mountain and a bit of a few downhill. This will help them for endurance and to prepare for their next races.”

The mountain run is within the Magical Kenya, Mountain Trail Series initiative which was launched on Tuesday by the head of Public Service, Felix Kosgei, and traversed among five counties including Laikipia, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet and Nandi.

The race will kick off with 14 kilometres senior girls at 8am followed by 1km senior women at 8.30AM.

At 10am, 8-12 year boys’ kids will see the same age group participate in the similar category at 10.20am.

In addition to the ongoing Heritage Trails Expedition and Barngetuny Run, the Magical Kenya Mountain and Trail Series will also feature other major events throughout the year.

These include the Nyamira Great Run Edition in May, Mt. Kenya Mountain Run Edition in June, Aberdare’s Trail Run Edition in August, Mt. Longonot Edition in November, and the Mt. Elgon Run in December.
