Andiego through to semis at African Olympic qualifiers

Kenya's Elizabeth Andiego defeated Ghanaian Ornella Sathoud in a unanimous points decision in the middleweight quarter-final at the ongoing Africa Olympic boxing qualifiers in Dakar.

Andiego controlled the fight from the first round through to the third as she advanced to the semis where she will meet 19-year-old Tunisian Molka Mabrouk.

"I have known my opponent since 2019, so I had studied her a little and I knew through my experience that I would be able to control the bout.

“I played the first round and I found that she has changed her style and is playing southpaw but due to my experience I knew that I was going to overcome her challenge.

“I used the same formula for all rounds and for now it’s step by step till we attain our goal. I'm very grateful to my coaches, hoping I'll finally get an Olympic ticket." Andiego said.

Kenya's Peter Abuti lost to Gabriel Albino of Mozambique in a heavyweight fight although the officiating and ultimately the result left the national team coach Benjamin Musa unimpressed.

"This fight was easier than his last fight, we are very disappointed because he lacked aggression and was very lethargic. From the word go he knew he was leading after the first rounds but we just don’t understand why he lost,” Musa said.

Other Kenyans who lost their quarter final bouts are Teresiah Wanjiru, Fredrick Ramogi, Friza Anyango and David Karanja.

Elsewhere Mohamed Firisse of Morocco defeated Fredrick Ramogi of Kenya on RSC (win by referee stops contest) 1st round. Ramogi knocked out Firisse in the 2019 Africa Games in Morocco.
