Two-time African champion Angela Okutoyi will lead the youthful Kenyan women’s tennis team as they begin their campaign in Group C of the 2025 Billie Jean King Cup, currently underway in Windhoek, Namibia till August 9

Kenya is pooled alongside Zimbabwe, Algeria, and Tunisia, with all teams set to compete in a round-robin format.

The top team from each group will advance to the promotional playoffs for a chance to move up to Europe/Africa Group II in 2026.

Conversely, the bottom teams in each group will play classification matches, with the lowest-ranked side facing relegation to Africa Group IV.

The Kenyan delegation features a blend of rising talent, including Cynthia Wanjala, Mekina Nanjala, Alicia Owegi, and Stacy Chepkemei Yego.

The Billie Jean King Cup, named in 2020 to honor the legendary American tennis icon, is the world’s premier international women’s team tennis competition.

Over 146 countries entered the 2025 edition, which follows a four-tier pyramid system.

Only eight teams will qualify for the Cup Finals in Shenzhen, China from September 16_21.

This year’s Africa Group III event in Namibia, initially scheduled for June, offers nations like Kenya a rare opportunity to thrive in a team-based international competition, a shift from the predominantly individual nature of tennis.

With Okutoyi at the helm and a motivated support cast, Kenya’s hopes of earning promotion are alive and well as the action unfolds in Windhoek.
