Kenya Ports
Authority (KPA) saw their 2022 FIBA Africa Women’s Club Championship campaign
come to an end after going down 76-70 at the hands of Egyptian side Alexandria
Sporting Club (ASC) on Thursday.
KPA had been
hoping to atone for the 78-67 defeat they suffered the last time the two sides
met in October, but the Egyptians proved too good yet again on the day as they
swept to the semis in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
KPA enjoyed
a strong start by winning the first quarter 16-15 but ASC found their rhythm in
the second to win 22-18. The Egyptians never looked back from that point on,
winning the third and fourth frames 21-16 and 20-18 respectively.
KPA will
play in a classification match against A.P.R of Rwanda to while Alexandria
Sporting Club will face Interclube of Angola in the semis.
KPA guard
Ifunaya Okoro continued to show why she deserved to be called in the team as
she stepped up with a game high of 31 points with Madina Okot and captain Natalie
Mwangale adding ten and six respectively.
Madina Okot
also continued to show her class in rebounds as she led with
16 rebounds
as Natalie Mwangale and Brenda Wasuda added six each.
KPA captain
and floor general Natalie Mwangale had a team high of five assists with three
steals while Ifunaya Okoro had two assists with two steals.
Cierra Janay
Dillard had a team high of 22 points for the Egyptian side as Shayla Cooper and
Asrar Bakr added 20 and 12 respectively.
Despite the
loss KPA head coach Anthony Ojukwu praised his girls for their display.
"The
focus and hunger, which the ladies brought in the game is recomendeble even
though fatigue and mental strength was our biggest undoing," Ojukwu said.
On her part
KPA assistant head coach Brenda Angeshi said they need to focus on remaining
games.
"It was
an interesting match, our turnovers costed us a great deal hence the loss but we
must move forward and focus on the next games.
“We will go
back to the drawing board and make better adjustments that will carry us
through the remaining games," Angeshi said.
