Bandari Queens, Gideon Starlets set for KWPL promotion playoff duel

Bandari Queens head coach Janet Amuga has expressed confidence ahead of their crucial Women's Kenya Premier League (WKPL) promotion playoff clash against Gideon Starlets FC at ASK Grounds, Nakuru on May 24.
Coach Amuga has reflected on what has been a promising season for her side in their debut campaign in the National Super League (NSL), and believes the team is ready to fight for the coveted slot in the country’s top league.
“It’s been a good season for us, though not without challenges. This was our first time playing in the NSL, so it was unfamiliar territory. But the players showed character, and we finished in a strong position that gives us a shot at promotion,” she said.
Amuga praised her squad’s morale and determination, adding that they are well-prepared tactically to face Gideon Starlets, even as she acknowledges the unpredictability of playoffs.
“We’ve studied our opponents, and we've prepared well. The girls are motivated, and they understand what’s at stake. We’ve done our part; now we leave the rest to God,” she added.
Bandari Queens concluded their NSL season in second with 44 points — six points behind league champions Kayole Starlets and three ahead of third-placed Mathare United Women FC.
The return of striker Happy Mutta has also given the team a significant boost. Mutta, who scored nine goals this season — just six behind top scorer Faith Mboya of Sunderland FC, had been sidelined for over three weeks but is now back in training.
“I’m happy to have Happy back. She had an excellent run before her injury. Now our focus is on sharpening her form ahead of the playoff,” said Amuga.
Bandari Queens also boast one of the league's top goalkeepers in Belinda Akinyi, who kept an impressive 13 clean sheets this season — the second-highest tally in the league.
Should Bandari Queens secure victory, they will become only the second team from Mombasa to earn promotion to the WKPL, following in the footsteps of Mombasa Olympic — who now find themselves battling relegation in their first season at the top.
