After a dominant 4-0 victory over Mombasa Olympic in their National Super League (NSL) opener, Bandari Queens are setting their sights high this season — with promotion to the top-tier Kenyan Premier League (KPL) firmly in their crosshairs.

Having narrowly missed out last season after finishing second in NSL Pool B and losing the promotion playoff to Gedeon Starlets, the Mombasa-based side has returned stronger and more determined.

Head coach Jonathan Washe believes this could finally be their breakthrough year.

“We are fully prepared, and our target is to go unbeaten,” said Washe after the emphatic win. “Last season we tried, but now we are determined to do it.”

Next up for Bandari Queens is a home clash at Mbaraki Stadium this weekend against familiar rivals Mathare Women, who also featured in the NSL last season. Washe expects a tough contest but remains confident in his squad’s quality and discipline.

“We know Mathare are tough, but we are tougher. We’ll approach the game tactically and go for maximum points,” he added.

Mathare Women come into the fixture with momentum, having edged Gor Mahia Queens 1-0 in their opener.

While Bandari Queens celebrate a flying start, their coastal neighbors Mombasa Olympic are facing a more challenging reality — financial struggles that threaten their long-term survival. Relegated from the Women’s Premier League last season, the team has lost key players and is currently operating without corporate backing.

Head coach Jumanne Barne voiced his frustration after the heavy defeat.

“We lost many experienced players after relegation, and now we must rebuild with younger talent,” said Barne.

“There are so many companies in Mombasa that should be sponsoring teams. Women’s football is suffering — no one is investing in us. Our team is currently running from an individual’s pocket.”

Meanwhile, newly promoted Diani Queens from Kwale County made an impressive NSL debut, defeating seasoned side MTG United from Kilifi County 2-1 in an entertaining encounter.
