Battle royal as Secondary School Games begin in Kisii

Its all systems go for the 2019 Term One Kisii County Secondary School Games as this year’s edition kicks off on Wednesday through Friday at Sameta Stadium and Tendere grounds.

The curtain-raising events will dominate the proceedings on Tuesday with both the referees and managers being screened at Sameta Stadium and Tendere grounds.

Unlike the previous editions this year event will see athletics, cross country, rugby 15s and 7s events that were initially held in separate terms lumped together.

The students will also compete in other disciplines such as basketball, handball, and hockey.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Kisii County Secondary Sports Association (KCSSA) secretary Geoffrey Nyatika said that the changes will only improve the quality of the competitions.

“We have really prepared well according to the changes in the calendar that we received from the national office. For instance, previously we did not have rugby 15s and 7s being played at the same time which will be the case this time.

“Also unlike before this time, we will have both athletics and cross country events being held in term one.”

Nyatika said that the association has meticulously prepared for this year’s events to ensure that only the best teams  make the cut for national competitions.

“We have really prepared well and we look forward to great contests and only the best will come out of the region,” he relished.

The association has upped the war on bogus competitors and will adopt the Unique Personal Numbers (UPNs) to ensure that only genuine students take part in the competitions.

“We will be adopting Unique Personal Numbers assigned by the ministry of education as the means to identify cheats. I’m sure that no one but student will compete in this year’s games,” Nyatika charged.

The KCSSA secretary also guaranteed that there will be fair officiating so that only the worthy teams get the crowns.

Elsewhere, last year’s Lake region champions Mogonga High School are certain to replicate their impressive form in this year’s competitions.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, the school’s Principle Haron Onchong’a maintained that his charges will not settle for second fiddle.

“I feel we’ll do better despite the challenges that we have had to go through. We have a better team all-round,” added Onchong’a.
