BFK picks Benjamin as head coach of African Games bound boxing team

The Boxing Federation of Kenya (BFK) has appointed a team of three to handle the All Africa Games bound team.

Musa Benjamin who is BAK’s Nairobi branch secretary has been picked as head coach and will be assisted by veteran coach David Munuhe while Isaak Mbote who also doubles up as BAK’s vice-chair will be the team manager.

The Games are set to run from August 19-31 in Rabat and Casablanca in Morocco.

The appointment comes less than a week after the executive named the provisional squad to report to camp for training.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, coach Benjamin acknowledged that the task ahead is not easy but hailed the quality in the team.

“We have an uphill task ahead of us but there is potential in the team as we plan to start our training on Friday before we whittle down the squad to the required number.

“Everything is in order, we have the training venue, the required equipment and above all the goodwill from the federation so we are ready to go,” said Benjamin.

BFK executive committee also made a resolution to incorporate former Kenyan international Duncan Kuria ‘Sugar Ray’ and Hassan Wafula into its executive.

Kuria thanked the federation for the consideration and hailed the team appointed to head the national team terming them the “best in the country”.

“I am grateful for the position and now I am looking forward to helping in uplifting the boxing game in the country.

“To me they are the best coaches that we have around as per AIBA certification. They are among the few three-star coaches in the country. I urge them to start early preparations for the games,” said the ex- international.

The team reports to camp this Friday at the Police Depot in Mathare, Nairobi.
