BFK selects team for African Boxing Championship

BFK selects team for African Boxing Championship

The Kenya Boxing Federation (BKF) is satisfied with the national trials held over the weekend to select the team that will represent the country at the 2022 African Boxing Championship in Maputo, Mozambique next month.

A total of 29 boxers, 16 male and 13 female were picked, according to BFK Secretary General David Munuhe.

Munuhe noted that it was not easy for some experienced boxers as little known ones gave them a run for their money at the Kaloleni Social Hall in Nairobi.

"We were looking for boxers who were well prepared and fit for the coming assignment. We expect to do well since Kenya performs well in the continent (Africa) competitions. The team will start special training on Tuesday at Kare Deport,’’ said Munuhe.

Kenyan boxers who took part in the Commonwealth Games earlier this month are back in the national team, following the trials.

Christine Ongare of the Kenya Police was too strong for Lencer Akinyi of Nairobi winning 3-0. In the bantam weight 45kgs category Shaffi Bakari had a unanimous points 3-0 decision win against Micheal Ndonga of Nairobi.

Captain Nick Okoth had an easy time dispatching Joshua Clive of Nairobi 3-0 in the lightweight 60kgs category.

Elizabeth Andiego made the team without throwing a punch as she had no opponent in the middleweight 75kgs category.

In other bouts Steve Olang of Nairobi made the team by shocking former hit squad member Joseph Shigali 3-0 in the Walter weight 67kgs category.

A total of 29 boxers, 16 male and 13 female were picked and will head to residential camp on Tuesday next week, in readiness for the 20th edition of the Africa Boxing Championship in Maputo, Mozambique.
