Big guns shoot best as Kenya Cup resumes

The Kenya Cup big guns laid down markers for the season with crucial season-opening wins as promoted sides got life at the top off to dreadful starts over the weekend.

Impala Saracens took early charge at the top following their 48-0 win over newbies Mombasa as the premier rugby competition resumed.

Nakuru RFC, KCB RFC, Kabras Sugar RFC and Menengai Cream Homeboyz are also joint on five points by trail on try difference with all four also winning their league openers across the country.

Nakuru sank Kisii RFC 45-5 at the Nakuru Athletic Club while KCB defeated Strathmore Leos 27-0 at the Ruaraka Grounds to kickstart their title defence bid in winning fashion.

The 2016 Kenya Cup winners Kabras fought to a 29-22 victory over Mwamba RFC as Homeboyz laboured to complete 41-39 win at home to Kenya Harlequins in Tuesday’s rescheduled fixture.

Predictably, newly promoted sides Mombasa and Kisii suffered the heaviest blows of the opening week action and occupy the bottom two slots after a foul start to life in the top flight.

The second round fixtures will see Harlequins welcome Nakuru, Mwamba host Impala while Kisii will look to capitalize on home advantage as they welcome big boys KCB. Homeboyz will make a short trip to Nondies at the Jamhuri Showground.

The match between Mombasa and Blak Blad that had been slated for Saturday has been rescheduled to Sunday due to unavailability of the Mombasa Sports Club.

Mombasa head coach Chris Atingo confirmed the day’s events will start at 2:00pm (EAT) with the Eric Shirley Shield between Mombasa II and Blad II before the Kenya Cup game at 4:00pm (EAT).

*All other matches on Match Day 2 will be played on Saturday at 4:00pm (EAT) unless stated otherwise.
