Kenya's poor run at
the IBA Women's World Boxing Championships continued last evening after
pugilist Everlyn Akinyi was beaten 5-0 in points decision by Cape Verde's
Ivanusa Gomes Moreira in the welterweight round of 16 bout.
The defeat makes her the ninth Kenyan boxer to be bundled
out of the championship while Moreira, a resident of Portugal, became the sixth-African
boxer to qualify for the quarter finals.
Kenya's medal hope now lies with light-heavyweight boxer
Elizabeth Andiego who will later today, to tackle Turkish Elif
Guneri in the quarter-finals.
It will not be an easy fight for Akinyi bearing in mind that last Friday Elif outwitted South Africa's Mkateko Sithole and also won a silver medal in the last world championship.
Kenya registered 10 boxers in the 12th edition of IBA Women's World Championships but so far it has been a poor run with Lorna Kusa, Christine Ongare, Ann Wanjiru , Beatrice Akoth, Elizabeth Akinyi ,Teresia Wanjiru, Amina Martha, Stacy Ayoma and Everlyn Akinyi, all knocked out.
