Bungei pushes for steeplechase legends' inclusion in AK's training to revive dominance

Former 800 meters Olympics champion, Wilfred Bungei, has urged Athletes Kenya to integrate former 3000m steeplechase legends into their training programs to revitalize Kenya's dominance in the sport.

In an interview with Citizen Digital, Bungei emphasized the importance of restoring Kenya's prowess in a race that was once synonymous with Kenyan greatness, epitomized by legends such as Moses Kiptanui, Brimin Kipruto, and Ezekiel Kemboi.

"For years, steeplechase was recognized as a Kenyan speciality, shaped by the accomplishments of our esteemed legends. It's imperative to involve them in preparing the current teams as they possess invaluable knowledge and experience in this domain," stated Bungei.

Kenya's most recent steeplechase gold at the World Championships was secured by two-time world champion Conseslus Kipruto in 2019. Kipruto succeeded four-time winner Ezekiel Kemboi, who clinched titles in 2009, 2011, 2013, and 2015.

Bungei believes that engaging these past champions will inspire and motivate the next generation of athletes.

"Sometimes, all it takes is the encouragement of someone who has walked the same path before you, affirming that success is achievable. Hence, it's crucial to involve all stakeholders who have contributed to the sport's success because they understand the journey firsthand," explained Bungei.

Kenya's dominance in the steeplechase was disrupted at the delayed 2020 Olympics when Sofiane El Bakkali claimed victory, breaking the country's tradition that had endured since 1984.

This trend continued at the following year's World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, where the Moroccan athlete once again dominated the field.
