There were scenes of joy and celebration at the Bullring in Kakamega on Thursday as Bungoma High School booked their place in the East Africa Secondary School Games rugby sevens competition for the very first time.

In what was a historic afternoon, Bungoma saw off Lenana School 22-12 in the national quarterfinals of the KSSSA 7s Championship, writing a new chapter for a school long known for its pedigree in 15s rugby.

This marks Bungoma’s return to the regional stage after a nine-year absence, their last appearance coming in 2016, but in the longer format of the game.

In other results, defending national champions Bwake thrashed Musingu 24-00 while giants Koyonzo ran over Nairobi school 40-07, resurgent St. Peter's Mumias were too good for Yala, thumping the Nyanza region representatives 12-00.

Bwake, Koyonzo and St Peter's complete the quartet of teams set to represent Kenya in the East African games to be hosted in Kakamega County in a fortnight.

KSSSA Quarter Final Results

Bungoma 22–12 Lenana

Bwake Boys 24–00 Musingu

Koyonzo 40–07 Nairobi School

St. Peter's Mumias 12–00 Yala
