Butali, Warriors of class, clobber Wazalendo to retain men Hockey title

Butali Sugar Warriors roared to a second successive men’s Hockey Premier League title after tearing helpless Wazalendo 2-0 in a league match on Saturday at the City Park.

The win hauled Warriors points tally to 42 beyond the reach of closest challengers Wazalendo who are on 33 points, the latter having played a game more than the champions.

Last term the Warriors edged Police to the title on the final day of action to bag the gong and have gone one step further to retain the crown.

Zack Aura and Francis Kariuki were the toast of the afternoon both scoring through short corners in the 24th minute and 55th minute to seal the win.

Denis Owaka, the Butali head coach expressed his delight at the conquest.

“Big win for us especially winning the title against Wazalendo who have been giving us a run. I am happy that we have retained the tittle,”Owaka said.

The tactician revealed that having young players in the squad who are hungry for goals and victory was an added advantage as it helped grease the wheels of their title challenge.

Remarkably, for Owoka, is winning the title unbeaten.

“So far we are still unbeaten which is great and it is a nice feeling and an achievement, we have had three draws and in the two remaining matches we want to win it clean,” he enthused.

The champions elect will face off with Parklands in their next assignment before wrapping their campaign with Greensharks on December 1.

On the other hand, Wazelendo assistant coach James Mwangi said they’re contented with their second position but rued the missed chances which he argues could have won them the tie.

“We played well but had a lot of wasted chances but all in all I’m  happy with the position we are in.

He went on: “Last season we finished fourth and this time round we are hopeful of being runners up.”

Wazalendo, with 33 points, play against third placed Kenya Police in their next match.
