Kenya is 98% ready to host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), according to Local Organizing Committee (LOC) Chairman Nicholas Musonye.
Speaking less than a month before kick-off, Musonye
confirmed that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is pleased with
Kenya’s progress, praising the country’s upgraded football infrastructure.
“Even Kenyans had doubts about our ability to host this
event, but now, based on CAF’s assessment, our facilities can meet any
international standard.
“I’ve been across Africa and I can confidently say many
countries don’t have what we have here,” said Musonye.
Originally scheduled for February, the CHAN tournament was
pushed to August due to concerns over the readiness of the host nations - Kenya,
Uganda, and Tanzania.
Kenya had lagged behind, especially in preparing the Nyayo
and Kasarani stadiums.
Musonye acknowledged minor finishing touches remain but
assured Kenyans that the key venues are essentially ready.
“No stadium is ever 100% complete for a tournament of this
scale. There will always be small issues, but overall, we are good to go.”
The 2024 CHAN will run from August 2 to 30, marking the
first time the three East African nations co-host a major CAF football
competition.
