Captain Situma rescues point as Tusker stumble

Tusker FC captain James Situma led from the front as his goal rescued a point for the Brewers who survived a late second half onslaught by Sony Sugar to maintain their slender lead at the top of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) to two points.

It was the former Sofapaka and Harambee Stars right-back’s first game back after serving his one match ban but the spoils were shared when Frederick Onyango canceled out Situma’s opener for the Sugar Millers who are now unbeaten in their last four matches.

“We are not focusing on tomorrow’s top of the table clash between Gor Mahia and Mathare because there is nothing we can do to affect the outcome of that game,” said Situma speaking to Citizen Digital.

“We came into this match gunning for the three points but had to settle for just one point and now all we can do is go back to the drawing board and focus on our next game.”

As it stands, the Brewers are now on course to finish the first leg of the season on top of the log after 14 rounds but the result opened the door for Mathare United to take charge of the KPL if they win at home to champions Gor Mahia on Sunday in the signature clash of the weekend.

Sony on the other hand continued with their low return of not scoring more than one goal in the 14 matches they have played this season as they broke into the top ten for at least 24 hours after starting the campaign with relegation fears.

Tusker conjured the first chance of the game in the 12th minute as two of their players found themselves alone with the only the keeper to beat but  Michael Khamati was adjudged to have fouled the custodian in the build up to the move.

The leaders broke the deadlock in the 25th as Sony’s poor clearance fell into the path of the unmarked Situma who buried it in the back of the net to make it 1-0.

David Okello came to the league leaders rescue in the 35th minute as his acrobatic save denied Sony forward, Daniel Ochieng, an almost certain equaliser.

After wasting a flurry of chances in the first half, Sony came good in the 66th when Onyango latched onto Ochieng’s sublime pass and calmly placed it past Okello to level the scores at 1-1.

Tusker coach, Paul Nkata brought on Luis Khamadi for Jackson Macharia with a quarter of the game left as he tried to look for an answer to Sony’s equaliser.

Former Tusker player, Ugandan Robert Omunuk was also brought on in the second half but his introduction had no impact as the match ended 1-1.
