Cash-strapped MMUST eye strong finish at Drifwood, Prinsloo 7s
Masinde Muliro University (MMUST) rugby team head coach John Asila has blamed the lacklustre performance endured by his team in the recent competitions, on the recent financial constraints affecting the club.
MMUST are currently placed sixth on 49 points in the National Sevens Circuit standings, and Asila decries financial setback is delaying his bid to build a formidable side that can challenge for the overall title.
With all the dire straits adduced to by coach Asila has however remained optimistic and confident he will steer the club to a respectable performance to the end of the season.
“Many of our opponents benefit from substantial financial backing and sponsorship, which MMUST lacks," he said.
"We are seeking additional funding to enhance our performance. As you know, government support is limited, and these young men depend on rugby for educational scholarships. Current challenges include inadequate food and accommodation for some players."
Team captain Veron Kaburu said they will ‘fight like lions’ in the final two legs of the season —Driftwood 7s and Prinsloo 7s.
"Our recent performance has been mixed, with our best result being a semi-final finish at the Dala 7s," he said.
Kaburu noted that the team also competed in the Kakamega 7s, Christie 7s, and Kabeberi 7s, where injuries to key players contributed to less favourable results.
Kaburu and his teammates are determined to secure a top-three finish at the Driftwood 7s in Mombasa this weekend.
The pools for the 2024 Driftwood Sevens have been announced, and MMUST has been placed in Pool A.
They will face KCB Rugby, Blak Blad, and Mombasa Sports Club on September 7 and 8.
