Kenya’s preparations for the 2024 African Nations
Championship (CHAN) have suffered a major setback following the departure of
attacking midfielder, the creative spark in Mohammed Bajaber, who has completed
a high-profile move to Tanzanian giants Simba SC.
According to Football Kenya Federation, the Police FC
attacking midfielder has signed a two-year deal with the Tanzanian Premier
League champions Simbas SC and is expected to link up with his new teammates
immediately for their pre-season tour in Egypt. His exit comes just five days
before Kenya kicks off their CHAN campaign against two-time champions DR Congo
on August 3.
In response to the latest exit, the technical bench swiftly
handed a late call-up to attacking midfielder Brian Michira on Sunday night,
with expectations that he will fill the void left by Bajaber.
The departure adds to growing uncertainty in the Kenyan
camp, especially after head coach Benni McCarthy had earlier defended Bajaber’s
inclusion in the squad despite concerns over his fitness. The South African
coach had revealed that Bajaber had been training individually and was nearing
full match sharpness.
McCarthy will now be forced to adjust his tactical setup,
with Bajaber becoming the third key player to leave the national team camp in recent
weeks. Forwards Emmanuel Osoro and Moses Shummah both exited the squad earlier
this month after sealing moves to Zambian Premier League sides.
Bajaber's importance to the team had been evident. He played
a critical role in Kenya Police’s historic FKF Premier League title win last
season and scored on his international debut during a World Cup qualifier
against The Gambia in March.
However, uncertainty continues to loom over the Harambee
Stars camp, with Sofapaka winger Edward Omondi and Tusker midfielder Erick
Otieno both spotted in training despite not being part of the earlier announced
squad.
The late changes and
departures have sparked concern over the team’s cohesion and readiness, as
Kenya eyes a strong start in a tough Group A featuring Morocco, DR Congo,
Angola, and Zambia.
