Chebet, Kiprop race to victory as Nairobi AK meet ends

Former world youth silver medallist Sandrafelis Chebet put up a spirited fight on Friday morning to win the women’s 10,000m, as the second leg of Athletics Kenya (AK) Track and Field ended at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Chebet clocked 33:29.3 to beat the world under-20 champion and her training partner Beatrice Chebet to the second spot in 33:29:7 as Naomi Vaati placed third in 33:55.6.

The athlete who is based at Lemotit Athletics Camp in Londiani said good preparations helped her fend off stiff competition.

She added that she has trained well ahead of the busy season with the Olympic Games her major target.

“I want to thank the coach for the training and discipline he has instilled to me, I’m now looking forward to the Lisbon half Marathon as well as other races this season,” she said.

At the same time, in the men’s 5,000m, African Games champion Robert Kiprop successfully defended his title flooring Emmanuel Kiprop and Rhonex Kipruto.

Kiprop surged to victory with 13:32.5 timings ahead of Emmanuel Kiprop who finished second in 13:33.1 as the 10km world record holder Kipruto sealed the podium in 13:33.8.

Speaking after defending the title he won at the first meet held at the University of Eldoret a fortnight ago, Kiprop was a happy lad acknowledging that the win was a major milestone and that although it was tough he was prepared to the teeth.

“I have been waiting for this win and I’m happy because I have achieved that against big names. Great things are coming and I can predict will have a stellar season,” said Kiprop.

In 800 metres contest, Africa Under-20 400 metres champion, Mary Moraa crossed the finishing line in 2:03.1 to emerge victorious, coming behind was Naomi Korir who clocked 2:03.8 while Sylvia Chesebe finished the podium lineup with 2:05.1 timing

Focus now shifts to the third round set for March 22 and 23 while Kisumu will host the subsequent one in April 4 and 5.
