Wadadia Captain Marion Abiona
believes that securing a chance to feature in the next season of the Kenyan
Women Premier League (KWPL) is a big achievement to them, having struggled
for the better part of the season in the danger zone.
Abiona played a big role as his
side secured a goalless draw against the League champions Vihiga Queens in a
match played on Sunday, June 5, 2022 at the Mumias Spots Complex.
The draw meant 10th placed Bunyore Starlets cannot catch up with
them, their final match result this weekend notwithstanding as they have 23
points – four above the Zachariah Amakhanga coached side.
In an interview with Citizen Digital Abiona hailed
her teammates for a good fight in the Sunday match and for securing heir WPL
Participation this season as she urged them to put more efforts in the last
match and in next season.
“For real it wasn’t an easy match for us considering that they
beat us 8-1 in the first leg. Pulling a draw against the champions alone is a
very big achievement for us and because we have secured our place next season,
we can celebrate silently as we shift focus to next season.”
The captain knows only by signing quality players can they be in
position to compete meaningfully in the top league next season.
“I’m urging our leaders to ensure they make more signings in
preparation for next season. Our squad this season comprised of students whom
most of the time misses the match due to school commitments if we can get
experienced players then that will boost our squad at large,” she noted.
Ahead of their final match against former champions Thika Queens
on Sunday, June 7, 2022, Abiona is optimistic of a win if they build on the
draw against Vihiga.
“We play Thika on Sunday in our final match, and they are coming
from a 1-0 loss in the hands of Kisumu All Starlets. This motivates us that we
can end the season on a high,” concluded Abiona.
