KCB RFC head coach, Andrew Amonde, has credited their triumph success in the just-concluded National Sevens Circuit to the squad's depth and quality.
The former Kenya Sevens captain revealed he had over 30 players to pick from choose from each weekend, giving him consistent quality across tournaments.
"I think the one thing that we did great was having a large group of players preparing for sevens. We had like more than 30 players training for KCB Serbians and out of that lot we were able to pick 14 every Tuesday. Although not everyone was able to play for KCB, I think having that large group was able to just propel us through the season," said Amonde.
Amonde, fondly known as Asusu in rugby circles, also lauded sponsor Kenya Commercial Bank for keeping the team well supported and motivated.
"Success is through, it has been enabled because of the bank (KCB) because the bank has invested so much in this team. They have given it a very smart platform to be able to prepare, first of all, to be a very successful pre-season and therefore, if you look at even the motivation behind the team, it has been through the bank," noted the former Kenyan international.
"So, I would like to say kudos to our sponsors for doing 100% for the team. This is just a reward of what the bank invested in them and I think they have given back. So, we are very encouraged by what the bank has given us, and therefore, the bank keeps on doing for us. So, you see, success is just not what you see. Success is what is done behind the scenes," he added.
The bankers also boosted their roster with Kenya Sevens star George Ooro from Strathmore Leos, who has impressed since joining the squad.
"George is a very successful player at the Kenya 7s. Bringing him at KCB, like I said, what the bank has done to bring George at KCB is a major step. He's brought the success he had in Kenya 7s, the success he had in Strathmore to KCB. And we see him being even a great player at KCB as he continues playing. So I would say George has played a major role, seeing him coming and just merging and being able to play as a KCB player and joining us and being seamless.”
KCB ended a two-year title drought with a
dramatic 15-14 over Strathmore Leos 15-14 before clinching the Dala Sevens
crown with a 12-5 drabbing of archrivals Kabras Sugar.
