Ouma has expressed confidence in his squad’s potential ahead of the second leg
of the 2025 National Sevens Circuit — the Prinsloo Sevens, set to take place in
Nakuru from August 2–3.
Ouma, a seasoned veteran of the sevens game, believes his
vast experience — both as a player and now as a coach — will be instrumental in
sharpening the team’s tactical approach ahead of their home tournament.
“The team has been performing well and has blended nicely
into the system. I’ve had the privilege of playing with most of these players,
and now I get to coach them. They’ll benefit from the perspective and lessons
of my own experience,” said Ouma.
Nakuru RFC impressed at the Driftwood 7s, edging out
reigning circuit champions Kenya Harlequins 19-17 in the quarterfinals before
falling 28-0 to Strathmore Leos in the semis. They eventually finished fourth
overall in Mombasa and currently sit fourth in the circuit standings — behind
Kabras, Strathmore, and KCB.
As hosts of the Prinsloo Sevens, expectations are high.
However, Ouma remains grounded in his approach, stressing the importance of
structure and mentorship as keys to long-term success.
“We’re focusing on improving our team structures and
refining our game plan. The experienced players will also play a big role in
mentoring the younger talents we’re developing for the future,” he added.
The Prinsloo Sevens is not just a critical home fixture, but
also a golden opportunity for Nakuru RFC to re-establish itself as a top
contender in the national circuit. Their best recent showing came in 2023, when
they reached the Kabeberi Sevens final.
With home support behind them and a motivated squad under
Ouma’s leadership, Nakuru RFC will be aiming for nothing less than a top finish
on home soil. The Prinsloo leg offers a prime chance to climb the standings and
build momentum heading into the remaining rounds of the circuit.
