Coast Media emerged as the undisputed champions of the 2025 Safaricom Inter-Media 5-Aside football tournament for the Coast region, dominating the finals with a convincing 3-0 victory over SwahiliPot FM at the vibrant “Uwanja wa Mbuzi” Stadium in Nyali, Mombasa.

In a thrilling showdown witnessed by hundreds of enthusiastic fans, Coast Media showcased flair, teamwork, and tactical brilliance, with star striker Eric Ochieng stealing the spotlight by netting a superb hat-trick to seal the win.

Despite a valiant effort from SwahiliPot FM goalkeeper Salim Mbarisa, the relentless pressure proved too much to handle.

The road to the title wasn’t without drama. Coast Media advanced past the knockout stage via a walkover after Standard Media Group failed to show up. In the quarter-finals, they mounted an impressive comeback to defeat DAYO FM 2-1, with both goals scored by Hajj Ramadhan.

Their semi-final clash against Sauti ya Pwani (SYP) was a true test of character. Trailing 1-0, Coast Media rallied once again—Mark Mutuku equalized before Ochieng sealed the win with a late strike, setting the stage for their emphatic final performance.

For their triumph, Coast Media took home Ksh.50,000 and a host of other prizes, while runners-up SwahiliPot FM earned Ksh.30,000 along with gifts from Safaricom.

Radio Kaya walked away with the Fair Play Award and a Ksh.10,000 prize for being the most disciplined team. All participating media houses were also recognized for their spirited involvement.

The tournament was part of M-Pesa’s 18th anniversary celebrations, with Safaricom engaging local businesses and residents in a week-long series of events across the Coast region.

“Media has been a crucial partner for us at Safaricom. That’s why we’ve dedicated this day to celebrate you through football. For us, everyone here is a winner, and we look forward to continued collaboration,” said Wachira Kang’aru, Communications Officer, Safaricom.

16 media entities participated in the one-day tournament.
