Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo steered clear of a discussion into his departure from Manchester United as the dust settles on their bitter split.

Ronaldo told Isaac Swila Manchester United ‘is a closed chapter’ as he batted away the Royal Media Services news editor’s question on his acrimonious divorce with the Premier League giants.

The Portugal captain, a free agent after his second stint at United ended abruptly last Tuesday, was fielding questions from journalists following his historic World Cup goal against Ghana on Thursday.

And Swila, who is covering the tournament in Qatar, was on hand to ask about how Ronaldo felt on the manner of his Old Trafford exit following an explosive interview on TalkTV where he criticized the running of the club.

“What are your thoughts – it’s been a difficult week for you – after terminating your contract with Manchester United and now scoring a goal here. What does it mean for Portugal and what should we expect from the team and you in particular going forward?” Swila asked.

To which Ronaldo responded:

“The most important step is we won. It was a week that finished this chapter. This chapter is closed. We wanted to start well. We won, I could help my team. All the rest does not matter.”

In the interview with Piers Morgan two weeks ago, Ronaldo said that the club had betrayed him and that he was being forced out, adding he did not respect manager Erik ten Hag.

Ronaldo rejoined United from Juventus for a second spell at Old Trafford in August 2021 on a two-year deal, returning to the club where he won eight major trophies from 2003-2009.

He said United did not support him when his daughter was taken to hospital in July and added that the Old Trafford club doubted him and showed a lack of empathy.

Last week, United issued a statement announcing they had reached a mutual agreement with Ronaldo to terminate his contract.

The 37-year-old forward then posted a corresponding statement moments later.
