Cruel fate as another rugby great breathes his last
Barely four days after the Kenya Rugby Union organized a special prayer day at the Nairobi Chapel for the rugby fraternity following the spate of deaths that has dogged the game; another veteran has taken his last breath.
George Gachui, a former Kenya Harlequins forward passed on on Tuesday evening, throwing the rugby fraternity into further mourning.
“It’s with great sorrow that we announce the death of a true Quin George Gachui “Pozza” who passed away this evening. Keep his family and friends in prayer,” Kenya Harlequins said in a statement on their official Facebook page.
Gachui captained the USIU select squad from 1996-1999, soon after the completion of his High School education at St.Mary’s School, Nairobi.
He thereafter kick started his career at Kenya Harlequins in 2001.
“He was a man of the people who was so concerned with the players’ welfare. It’s a big loss because he was one of the most outstanding officials of Harlequins.He loved the game so passionately,” Citizen TV Sports Reporter, Bernard Ndong, who frequently interacted with the deceased in line of duty, mourned.
Gachui’s demise comes barely two weeks after the murder of Nakuru RFC flanker Mike Okombe .
Three days ago, Mumias RFC youngster Thomas AsekaDeath strikes the heart of rugby again was also found dead in his apartment in Mumias, while last week, former Homeboyz skipper Peter Wekesa and his brother Andrew Wekesa were killed in a tragic road accident in Mariakani, Mombasa.
