CWG: Mokamba, Asamba, Ochieng and Ndoro progress into 200m semis
Mike Mokamba, Dan Kiviasi
and Hesborn Ochieng have qualified for Friday's 200m men semi-final at the Commonwealth
Games in Birmingham.
Mokamba and Kiviasi
qualified automatically while Hesborn Ochieng went through as a non-automatic
qualifier after finishing fourth in his Heat
Kenya Defense speedstar
Forces Mokamba with a season’s best of 20.65 and a personal best of 20.48 was
the first to qualify through heat 3 with a time of 20.82sec coming second
behind England’s Zharnel Hughes who clocked 20.30secs.
Kiviasi won Heat 7 in a
time of 20.76seconds ahead of Russel Alexander of Malaysia who also qualified
automatically with a time of 21.13secs.
Meanwhile Ochieng
squeezed through the non-automatic qualifiers slot with a time of 21.30secs.
The Kenyan trio timed
39.28 together with the newly-crowned Commonwealth 100m champion Ferdinand
Omanyala won the 4x100m Africa Senior
Athletics Championships in Reduit, Mauritius and aim to repeat that feat in
Birmingham.
Elsewhere Kenya’s
Millicent Ndoro (24.03) finished in the top-three automatic qualification places
in 200m joining Namibia's Christine Mboma, the Olympic runner-up, who clocked
23.20 seconds and Australia's Ella Connolly (23.56).
The 200m semis are set for Friday.
