Equity complete series rally to lift KBF title

Equity Bank are the 2018 Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) women’s champions, toppling holders KPA for the crown by winning 73-64 to seal their final playoff series 3-1 on Sunday.

Equity, who last won the title in 2016, lost Game One 67-57 in Mombasa before pulling off an impressive rally to take Games Two (64-47), Three (64-59) and Four to be declared champions.

Equity started out strongly with a 19-06 win in the first quarter before KPA narrowly won the second quarter 14-11. They went to halftime with Equity leading 30-20.

In the third quarter, Equity reorganised themselves to hammer KPA 29-18. KPA rose to the occasion in the last quarter winning 26-14 but it was too late for them as the Bankers had already stretched them too far.

Both teams will represent the country in the Zone five Championship next year.

“I have fulfilled my purpose. Winning two times in three years is a great achievement. We started this team five years ago and I said it will be known in Africa and it will victorious in Kenya,” Equity head coach David Maina said after the match.

Team captain Joyce Nabwire showed her excitement over the win.

“I’m very excited and greatfull for achieving what what we had set in the beginning of the year,” Nabwire said.

KPA head coach Antony Ojukwu thanked his players for the good game they have showed throughout the season.

‘I’m happy for my players despite playing under difficult conditions especially after loosing six of our players they still managed to give their best,” Ojukwu said.

Team captain Brenda Angeshi congratulated Equity for winning the trophy saying there’s is always next time.
