Equity Hawks maul Eagles to cement KBF league lead
Clinical Equity Hawks tightened their league lead after handing struggling Eagle Wings a crushing 59-42 rout in a Kenya Basketball Federation league tie on Saturday at Nyayo Stadium Gymnasium.
The bankers now sit top of the table with 31 points after winning 15 matches out of a possible 16, slumping their lone defeat to ex-champions Kenya Ports Authority (KPA).
Hawks lifted off the first period thanks to Salma Akinyi and Linda Alando combining for 10 points to punch Wings 19-9, before Wings bounced back in the second period with the bold Eunice Ouma pouring 9 points to clip Hawks 4-12, setting the scores at 23-21 by haft-time.
The reigning champs reignited their boom, Betty Kananu and Belinda Okoth combining for 20 points to blow Wings 18-10 and 18-11 in the third and fourth quarter respectively.
But even so, Eunice Ouma’s game-high 16 points was not enough to fire the struggling Eagle Wings over gallant Equity Hawks.
In another match Clara Rotich poured game-high 15 points to thrust Strathmore Swords to a 60-43 rout of Africa Nazarene University (ANU) in an intense varsity derby at the same venue.
Bold Swords handed ANU a crushing 3-20 rout in the opening quarter before ANU avenged in the second quarter thumping Swords 21-9 to set the half-time score to 24-29.
However, Swords found their spark thumping ANU 9-13 and 10-18 in the third and fourth quarter in that order.
Susan Manya and Neema Achieng sunk 11 and 12 points respectively for Swords while Caroline Njeri sunk game-high 15 points for ANU.
Swords bounced back to their winning ways after slumping to a 45-32 loss against Varsity foils Zetech last weekend.
