FKF set to postpone Mashemeji derby

The Mashemeji Derby will likely be moved from its January 3rd date if CAF postpones Gor Mahia FC’s CAF Champions League clash against CR Belouizdad, FKF CEO Barry Otieno has said.

Gor are scheduled to play the Algerians tomorrow but are unable to make the trip due to logistical challenges and have written to CAF requesting to have the match pushed back.

That would affect their domestic league fixtures including against their eternal rivals AFC Leopards who have made a flying start to the season.

“If the fixtures (CAF Champions League and the FKF Premier League matches) conflict then it will mean that we will have to make some changes on the dates.

“However we are first of all waiting to hear from CAF whom we have written to push back the CAF tie to give Gor Mahia time to travel to Algeria or grant them a neutral ground plea instead of Algeria”, Otieno said.

Last night, CAF had it’s match day list of matches to be played today (Tuesday) with Gor Mahia vs hosts Belouizdad unchanged.

Yesterday, AFC Leopards head coach Antony Modo Kimani had indicated that the derby may be postponed to give their rivals recovery time.

“We were supposed to play Gor Mahia on January 3 but I guese the match will be postponed since they are supposed to play their CAF Champions League match return leg here in Nairobi at around that date”, Kimani said.
