For Weru, it’s playoffs berth or nothing as 2019/20 Kenya Cup season begins
Menengai Oilers head coach Gibson Weru is aiming at nailing a playoffs slot as the Kenya Cup play-offs as the 2019/2020 season kicks off this weekend.
The Nakuru based side will host their fierce rivals Top Fry Nakuru at the ASK Nakuru showground on Saturday, and the former Shujaa player says they’re well prepared for the fixture expecting his charges to win the duel.
“We have prepared well and we’ve a squad that is well conditioned, we’ve worked well on our fundamentals and we’re expecting a win against our fierce rivals Nakuru since we want to start the season with a big statement and focus on reaching the play-offs,” Weru told Citizen Digital.
Oilers reached the Floodlit tournament final losing 23-14 against KCB RFC and Weru believes they had a good preseason ahead of the Kenya Cup season.
“We had a good preseason reaching the floodies finals, so we’re going to take each match at a time focusing to win our first nine games because they’ll determine how we’ll finish the season, our target being the play-offs stage,” he added.
Weru lauded his charges progression for reaching the floodies final saying they know where they went wrong and they’ve worked on that and they’re focusing on the first half of the season to see if they will achieve their target.
Oilers have acquired the services of Kenya Under-20 player Timothy Okwemba and Emmanuel Mula from Masinde Muliro University, Dalamas Chituyi from Homeboyz, Sam Were who was Laiser Hill student, Eliud Salamba,(Makueni), Adams Nyamwea of Mangu High, Steve Arunga (Laiser Hill) and Eliud Salamba from Makueni RFC.
“For the new guys that are coming in it’s a working progress, there are some who have fitted in with our playing system like Timothy Okwemba and for the other guys is to keep working hard to reach the level we want them to so that they earn a slot in our squad,” pressed Weru.
Oilers finished eighth last season with 36 points, 38 points behind table toppers Kabras Sugar.
